With midterm exams right around the corner, academic stressors are beginning to build. Although it may be easy to succumb to the midterm-moodies, break free of that pattern and schedule in some TLC! With thousands of acres of land and hundreds of weekly entertainment opportunities on campus, here are a few ideas of how to stay calm, cool, and creative when the midterm heat turns up:

1. Krannert Art Museum

Located on 500 E. Peabody Dr, the Krannert Art Museum (KAM) is a necessary pit-stop when midterm morale is low and some silent headspace is needed. KAM promotes an array of art dating from the fourth millennium BCE to the present, varying both in culture and artistic expression. Some current exhibitions include: Provence: A Forensic History of Art; Coveting Nature: Art, Collecting, and Natural History in Early Modern Europe; Propositions on Revolution (Slogans for a Future). KAM also generously provides free guided Yoga at the Museum classes as well, every Friday at noon. Nothing like mindful relaxation to keep the body centered and the mind creative!

2. Japan House

The Japan House mission is “to bring about cultural understanding, to offer exposure to new perspectives and, ultimately, to give a necessary refuge for all to embrace tranquility in an immersive and experiential environment.” If that doesn’t say peace and quiet, then nothing does! Only blocks from the main campus, the Japan House is surrounded by the Hartley Gardens, the Arboretum and miles of trails for running, walking, and cherry blossom gazing. If beating the heat is a must, the Japan House itself offers Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremonies, Tsukimi: Moonviewing events, and numerous workshops and zen studies.

3. Art Theater in Downtown Champaign

For the extrovert looking to recharge in a non-introspective environment, the Art Theater is here for every movie fanatic’s taste! Whether movie dates are on the agenda or a midnight showing with friends, the Art Theater is always stocked with classic films to play. The Art Theater is now playing: The Trip to Spain, Marjorie Prime, Grease (Sing-Along), and many more. Be sure to check out these classic films before it’s too late!

Most importantly, remember to stay calm, cool, and creative on campus to keep the midterm-moodies away!
