There’s a LOT going on in our world right now. It’s enough to get anyone feeling down and wondering, what can I do to help? Thankfully, many organizations on and around campus are hosting fundraisers and community service events to help lessen the impact that current events have had on our world and community. Here’s a short list of opportunities for students to give back:

Alpha Phi Omega: Miles of Pennies

Alpha Phi Omega is a national service fraternity dedicated to promoting leadership, friendship, and service. They are launching a campaign to raise money for hurricane relief with the goal of fundraising one mile of pennies, which equals 84,480 pennies or $844.80. On the last day of the campaign, October 29th, the fraternity will be on the main quad from 12:30-1:30pm holding a penny design competition between six teams composed of fraternity members. Each team will have 1000 pennies to create a design, and at the end of the hour, individuals will be able to “vote” on their favorite designs by donating to the respective teams’ boxes. All money raised will be donated to Team Rubicon, an organization that unites military veterans with first responders to deploy emergency response teams. They have currently been focusing on hurricane relief. To learn more about this campaign and to donate, visit their Facebook donation page here.

Wesley Food Pantry

Wesley United Methodist Church hosts an evening food pantry the third Thursday of every month from 5:30-7:30pm for those facing food insecurity. The pantry needs volunteers to help stock, setup, and distribute food. Volunteering at the pantry is a great way to give back to our local community and see the direct impact we can have. You can learn more about the pantry here and sign up to volunteer here.

Habitat for Humanity: Trick or Treat for Change

The University of Illinois Chapter of Habitat for Humanity works with Champaign County to end poverty housing in Champaign. Students help build houses in the area for families currently living in substandard housing. In order to fund the construction of these houses, Habitat needs donations from the community. Because of this need for donations, the University Chapter hosts fun fundraising events throughout the year. Their upcoming fundraising event is “trick or treating” for donations. Fundraisers can dress up in their Halloween costumes and visit houses in the Champaign-Urbana area asking for donations. There will also be a costume contest with the chance to win prizes! The Facebook page for the event is here, and more information about the Illinois Chapter of Habitat can be found here.

OVP: Thanksgiving Basket Drive

Believe it or not, Thanksgiving is right around the corner! Unfortunately, there are some families that cannot afford a nice Thanksgiving dinner. In order to allow all families to celebrate this wonderful holiday with a delicious meal, the Illini Union Office of Volunteer Programs (OVP) is hosting a Thanksgiving Basket Drive. The drive will take place November 1st-14th, and they will be collecting various food items, a list of which can be found here. There are also volunteering shifts available for students to take inventory of items and sort baskets, as well as promote the drive. Sign up for a volunteer shift here!
